Book Description

Publication Date: April 11, 2005 | ISBN-10: 047001041X | ISBN-13: 978-0470010419 | Edition: 2
This Second edition contains consise information on 134 carefully chosen named organic reactions – the standard set of undergraduate and graduate synthetic organic chemistry courses. Each reaction is detailed with clearly drawn mechanisms, references from the primary literature, and well-written accounts covering the mechanical aspects of the reactions, and the details of side reactions and substrate limitations. For the 2nd edition the complete text has been revised and updated, and four new reactions have been added: Baylis-Hillmann Reaction, Sonogashira Reaction, Pummerer Reaction, and the Swern Oxidation und Cyclopropanation. An essential text for students preparing for exams in organic chemistry.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“…the clarity of the text and the extensive coverage would make this an excellent book for a graduate student or upper level chemistry major. Practicing organic chemists…might also find it a worthy addition to their personal libraries.” (Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, January 26, 2006)”…an indispensable resource…the essential nature of each of the reactions addressed in the book is presented in sufficient detail…” (Journal of Chemical Education, December 2005)”This book is an essential guide to named organic reactions for chemistry students, organic chemists, and chemists in general.” (Chemical Educator, May/June 2005)

From the Publisher

Named reactions are reactions which have been tested and recognized. They are an essential part of organic chemistry and can help a chemist decide which reaction is best for a given task. This book is a guide to 134 key reactions The chapters are ordered alphabetically and are each treated systematically, giving the name of the reaction, followed by an explanatory subtitle and the scheme for the overall reaction together with a few introductory sentences. This book will be the definitive guide to named organic reactions, for those studying or working in the fields of medicinal, pharmaceutical and industrial chemistry as well as biochemistry, polymer and materials science. –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

For the Second Edition the authors have completely revised the whole text. With the Baylis-Hillman Reaction and the Swern Oxidation, new reactions have been added. Key reactions such as the Sharpless Epoxidation and the Heck Reaction have been completely revised. Where necessary new references were added and new developments such as the Sharpless Dihydroxylation have been included.Overall, this book is concentrating on the most important named organic reactions. The reactions are presented in alphabetical order, from the Acyloin Condensation to the Wurtz Reaction. For each reaction clearly outlined reaction mechanisms and applications are presented.Named Organic Reactions, 2nd Edition provides
  • The perfect revision aid to key organic reactions
  • References for easy information access
  • Further information, including side reactions, yields and variations of the reaction
This book is the essential guide to named organic reactions for chemistry students.
